What Readers Are Saying
This is completely fascinating! Especially the difference in how Hal (man) and Cristina (woman) see things. It couldn't be better scripted, although you of course don't get to see that. Keep up the excellent writing, and I'll continue to enjoy reading!"

"I'm so excited to be 'traveling' with you! To be honest, you helped inspire me to embrace my own life more fully and to not hold back. It's causing some relationship discomfort, but it's worth it to me to be more authentic and honest in who I am."
-Chris B.
"what can I say.. this is by far the coolest thing I have ever read.."

History
The project diaries were originally published online under the title Putting Up Walls. Readers participated in the journey each day as Hal and Cristina posted their entries but were forbidden to look at what the other had written. Upon completion of the journey, the diaries were exhibited online, side by side as The Great Heartbreak Experiment. The final book was compiled from the two halves and titled Dual Nature.

Synopsis
Cristina Garcia was in a dead-end job and a dead-end relationship in Dublin, Ireland when she discovered a wildlife photo by Hal Brindley in a local newspaper. She looked up his website and sent him an email about how she longed to return to Africa to pursue her zoology career. Hal, who had just come out of heart-wrenching break up himself, jokingly asked if he could come along. They agreed to meet up in Africa and travel together for seven months.
First, they decided to spend a week in Cristina's hometown of Barcelona, Spain. There they would determine whether they could stand being together for seven months in the African wilderness. Some unexpected twists of fate bring the strangers' closer and three months later they would meet again in South Africa.
Follow Cristina and Hal as they buy a beat-up truck in Cape Town, track cheetahs and leopards on a reserve in KwaZulu Natal, swim with dolphins on the beach of Mozambique, camp in the Central Kalahari of Botswana, one of the most remote wilderness areas on the planet, drive to the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, and learn something about tearing down their own walls along the way. |
